Original Gyotaku (Fish Pressing) Botanical Art.
This Picture of a Prawn has been printed using the Gyotaku method of nature printing and has been mounted and framed in a white painted frame size H: 28cm W:33cm
Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing Fish a practise that dates back to the mid 1800’s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches (before photography) but became an Art form in its own right.
Fishermen would apply Sumi ink to one side of a freshly caught fish then cover the fish with rice paper and rub to create an impression of the fish.
The fish is not wasted after the printing process as it can be can be washed with water while the ink/paint is still wet, filleted, cooked and enjoyed.
