Gyotaku is an ancient Japanese fish printing technique dating back to the mid-1800s. “Gyo” means fish, and “taku” means rubbing or pressing. This form of nature printing, which predates photography, was initially used by Japanese fishermen to record and identify their catches. Over time, it evolved into an art form. The process involved painting fish with Sumi ink, covering them with Washi paper, and then rubbing the paper. When the paper was removed, it revealed a reverse impression of the fish. According to legend, a Japanese Emperor, an avid fisherman, wanted to showcase his prized catches and commissioned artists to add colour to the Gyotaku prints, thus introducing an artistic flair. Traditionally, Gyotaku art features the artist’s signature in the form of a Japanese Hanko stamp.
